Don't Mean a Thing

Bronx, N.Y., June 30, 2011 – I would never have admitted it going in, but I really loved the Yankees’ chances for the three-game sweep of the visiting Brewers Thursday afternoon. And it wasn’t just that the Yanks had just beaten Milwaukee’s twin 7-2 (going in, 7-3 leaving) aces in the first two gamers of the series. Randy Wolf is a veteran southpaw, the kind of hurler that often has success in the ballparks in the Bronx, and the NL Central first-place Brewers must have been spoiling a for a fight off a bumbling loss in game 1, and a largely hitless one in the second contest. Bronx, N.Y., 2011 – For the majority of the 46,000-plus populating Yankee Stadium on a glorious Wednesday night, the Yankee 5-2 win over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers was an enjoyable win over a team the Yanks rarely see. The Bombers have played the Brew Crew two straight, faced back-to-back 7-2 aces, and have beaten both. And they moved two more games up on the Red Sox in first place in the AL East. • Following an hour rain delay the Yanks took another game with late offense, though it wasn’t a come-from-behind win, in the new Stadium on June 30, 2009. Consecutive no-out eighth-inning hits by Hideki Matsui, Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera, and Derek Jeter scored three runs, and the Bombers beat Seattle 8-5. Alex Rodriguez contributed a two-run homer to the win, and Mariano Rivera got the save. Continue reading June 30 in Yankee History

Bronx, N.Y., June 28, 2011 – The Tuesday contest between the visiting Milwaukee Brewers and the Yankees in the Stadium was an intriguing one on several levels, and not just because each club sits atop its division. With many a Yankee fan clamoring for starting pitching help over the winter, the Yanks never really set their sights on the available KC Royal righty Zack Greinke once the Cliff Lee plans were foiled, much to the displeasure of some of theiir fans. • This is a day where among some great games the biggest and best Yankee news may just have taken place off the field. The Yankees made a significant addition to their team on June 29, 1950, when they brought young lefty Whitey Ford up from AA Kansas City. Continue reading June 29 in Yankee History

  • You don’t earn a name like the Bronx Bombers lightly, but putting up numbers like the Yanks did on June 28, 1939, sure helps. The eight home runs they hit in the first game of that day’s doubleheader was a record. When they made it 13 on the day with five more in the second game, that was another, as were the 53 total bases they earned in the two games. Joe DiMaggio, Babe Dahlgren, and Joe Gordon each hit three home runs as the Yankees swept the A’s, 23-2 and 10-0. Continue reading June 28 in Yankee History

  • It was a rarity in 1978 when Ron Guidry didn’t go deep into a game, and when the opposition scored. But the Yanks picked him up on June 27, when Gator only went six innings and gave up eight hits to the Red Sox. Graig Nettles won the game in the 14th inning with a two-run jack off Dick Drago, 6-4. Sparky Lyle got the win in relief, and Guidry’s record held at 13-0. Continue reading June 27 in Yankee History
  • Yanks Take Rocks to the Matt

Bronx, N.Y., June 26, 2011 – The weather gods smiled on the Bronx Sunday afternoon on one of the most special Yankee days of the year, as the Old Timers came and entertained us – and each other – yet again. Five Yankee widows and 47 Old Timers were feted, and retiring Yankee trainer Gene Monahan came in for special attention. Before the longtime Yankee staffer was given a string of gifts including a Garth Brooks 10-gallon hat and concert, a multi-signed Nascar helmet, a trip to the Alps, a sitdown lawnmower and a Ford truck (perhaps with a dog?), laughing taped interviews with stars like Derek Jeter – “he’s been here 100 years, I think” – and Don Mattingly – “he worked on Babe Ruth, you know” – set a loving and comical tone. • I spent many a frustrating hour on the George Washington Bridge in the 80’s traveling to and from the Baseball Cathedral in the Bronx. But the worst day (in terms of my frustration; in sum, it was a great day) was June 26, 1987. I was stuck in a Stadium-caused traffic jam as the Yanks battled the Red Sox, and I wasn’t going to the game, but rather driving Irish relatives to my father’s house. Meanwhile the Yanks were having a glorious day, as they made a miraculous comeback against Roger Clemens and the Red Sox, and halted Wade Boggs’s hit streak at 25 in the process. Down to The Rocket 9-0 in the second, the home team tied a club record with the dramatic comeback win, 12-11, in 10 innings. New York plated 11 in the home third, with Don Mattingly (four hits) and Dave Winfield (four rbi’s) leading the way. Continue reading June 26 in Yankee History

  • Normally a seat in the high left-field corner, as in the new Yankee Stadium in 2009, is not a favored perch from which to watch a game. But I daresay there was no better place on my visit to PNC Bank in Pittsburgh on June 25, 2008, what with the gorgeous view of the Allegheny River beyond the left field fence. Rightfielder Bobby Abreu had a home run, scored twice, and drove in four in the 10-0 Yankee win after the Bombers had fallen to the Pirates the night before. Joba Chamberlain was the recipient of all the Yankee offense, and lefty Zach Duke started and took the loss for the Pirates. Continue reading June 25 in Yankee History
