They’re all emotional events, but Old Timer’s Day on June 20, 2015, in Yankee Stadium was a particularly poignant affair. The retiring of No. 30 and a plaque in Monument Park for Willie Randolph was expected, but the presence, and then addition to that honor, of an ailing Mel Stottlemyre brought many a tear. The Clippers beat the Bombers 3-2 in two innings in the game that followed, then the Yankees blasted the Tigers, 14-3. Driving Alberto Simon from the mound in the third, the offense was led by five rbi’s from Alex Rodriguez, with three more from Carlos Beltran, and two each from Didi Gregorius and Chris Young. He homered in four consecutive at bats in one game and led everyone with 23 career grand slams for eight decades until he was tied, then passed, by Alex Rodriguez). He had a .340 lifetime batting average, gathered 175, then 174, rbi’s in 1927 and 1930, respectively, and the 184 in 1931 are the most ever in the American League. You had to wonder if the practice the Yankees introduced to their game entertainment in 2019 of “Eighties in the Eighth,” playing a 1980s song in between the top and the bottom of the eighth inning, utilized songs decided upon early in the day, because Lionel Ritchie‘s All Night Long was just too fitting for a game delayed an hour-plus by rain. With J.A. Happ going five, the Yanks took the visiting Rays 6-3 as Cameron Maybin had three hits, including a home run, and Gary Sanchez knocked in two. I never thought Ron Guidry‘s 18-strike-out, 4-0 win over California in 1978 would be supplanted atop the June 17 Yankee report, but Masahiro Tanaka deserves his moment in the sun for his two-hit, 3-0, complete-game performance over Tampa in Yankee Stadium on June 17, 2019. On the other side of the ball, young Yonny Chirinos allowed just five hits over six innings, but one shot each by DJ LeMahieu and Cameron Maybin cleared the fence. Although Anthony Rizzo was the hands-down star of the 2-1 Yankees win over visiting Tampa on June 16, 2022, the team got a pretty big boost from backstop Jose Trevino as well. Rizzo knocked in both runs, first with a sixth-inning single, but more dramatically with a walkoff home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Yankee fans had a nice game-long celebration on Sunday, June 14, 2009, when the Bombers recorded an unexpectedly easy 15-0 rout of Johan Santana and the Mets in the Bronx to take the first half of crosstown interleague two games to one (it would grow to five to one in weeks). Although he didn’t need to be, A.J. Burnett was superb, Derek Jeter had three hits, two rbi’s and two runs scored, and Johnny Damon and Robbie Cano drove in three runs apiece. We could feature the 1-0 loss that A.J. Burnett (five hits, eight strike outs, one run, in eight) and the Yankees suffered at the hands of young Carlos Carrasco and the Indians in Yankee Stadium on June 13, 2011, in light of its haunting familiarity to some offensive woes the 2012 team had. Not ony did the Yanks fail to score with the bases loaded and nobody out in the first, no Yankee crossed home plate in the second either once the first two batters reached. But the greater significance of this game, really, was the sore right calf that sent Derek Jeter to the disabled list after it, just a few hits short of the magical 3,000-hits mark.
