June 2 in Yankee History

  • June 2 is a sad day in Yankee land, as Lou Gehrig was lost to amyotropic lateral sclerosis, the condition that is more famously referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, on this day in 1941. But the Yankee organization did institute the first ever “Lou Gehrig Day” on this day in 2021, and the team responded with a 4-3 win over Tampa. Jordan Montgomery went six for the win, and Gio Urshela and Clint Frazier supplied the offense, driving in two apiece. Gio whacked a two-run homer in the first, while Clint, coming off an 11th-inning walkoff the previous day, singled for two in the fourth. Continue reading

  • The first (historically and tradition-wise) of two huge June 1 Yankee days took place as Lou Gehrig pinch-hit for shortstop Paul Wanninger in 1925 in a 5-3 loss to the Senators. The next day Lou played first for Wally Pipp, making what was to become his record consecutive-games streak two games old. Continue reading

  • Marvelous reclamation project and free agent Chris Carpenter got the Yanks off toward a 9-1 victory over visiting Baltimore with his second Bomber long ball, a two-run home run in the first inning on May 31, 2022. DJ LeMahieu and Jose Trevino also drove in two, the latter with an eight-inning bomb that capped the scoring. Continue reading

  • Young Padres righthander Chris Paddock came into Yankee Stadium with some lofty numbers for the May 29, 2019, game, but DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit turned two of his first six pitches into home runs, and Gio Urshela went yard in the second. On the other side of things, it was disappointing that James Paxton pitched just four innings for the Yankees, but you wouldn’t know it from the final score, which was a 7-0 win by the good guys. Voit would triple in front of a two-run Gleyber Torres home run in the seventh, and Cameron Maybin stole a run in the sixth, following a single by purloining both second and third, then scoring on a throwing error on the latter. • The first 10 Yankees to come to bat in the home third vs the visiting Padres on May 28, 2023, either reached or made outs to score others in a seven-run frame. Kyle Higashioka doubled twice in the inning, and Willie Calhoun once. San Diego scored four times late to narrow the final to 10-7. Continue reading

  • On May 27, 2019, Memorial Day, with all of baseball poised to halt the games for a moment of remembrance at 3 pm, the Yankees prevailed over the Padres 5-2. Opener Chad Green combined with “starter” David Hale to strike out the first four, until San Diego scored two off Hale in the second. But New York went up 3-2 almost right away on home runs by Clint Frazier and Brett Gardner in the bottom half. It stayed that way until Adam Ottavino retired DH Josh Naylor on a ground ball to second for out No. two in the top of the sixth, and the “moment” arrived. The Bombers added two in the eighth on a Gary Sanchez home run and a Gleyber Torres double. Continue reading

  • It will come as little surprise to any 2024 Yankee fan who broke up a scoreless duel in Yankee Sradium on May 26, 2023, between the Yankees and the Padres. A two-run home run by Juan Soto in the fifth was shortly joined by another blast for two in the sixth by Fernando Tatis, Jr. in the 5-1 final. Continue reading

  • Young lefty prospect JP Sears, recalled from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this day, and who has since been traded to Oakland, got his second win for the Yankees in a 2-0 victory over visiting Baltimore on May 25, 2022. JP’s five innings were enough for the win, as fourth-inning singles by Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres, and Miguel Andujar plated one, and another scored on a catcher’s throwing error during the next at bat. • Playing for visiting Baltimore, ex-pinstriper Rougned Odor came back to haunt the Yankees in a May 24, 2022, game, as his three-run, seventh-inning home run wiped out a lead the Yanks had held all day since Anthony Rizzo homered in the first. But a Gleyber Torres home run and Jose Trevino rbi single tied things at 5-5. The Orioles were able to push across a run in the 11th, but rbi hits from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Trevino, again, plated two in the bottom of the frame, for a 7-6 Yankee win. Continue reading
